Mauritius – 7th Grander of the Year

Mauritius – While fishing in a local fishing Tournament, Moana 2 caught and weighed a 1,162 lbs. Blue Marlin. This should come as no surprise as a lot of local boats were catching fish of size. Congratulations to the Moana 2!

The Captains full name is Berty Beersaye, the son of Capt. Vijaye Beersaye, who holds the Mauritian Blue Marlin Record of 1, 355 lbs. He has been with JP Henry Charter for 18 Years.

Ascension – 4th Grander of the Year

Ascension Island – Our 4th Grander of the year was a beautiful 1,100 lbs. Blue Marlin, released by Capt. Olaf Grimkowski on the Harmattan. This is the 2nd Grander for Capt. Olaf this year, having weighed a 1,093 lbs. Blue Marlin a few weeks back.

Here is what Capt. Olaf had to say about this fish.

“After a couple of quiet days we did inshore fishing for a couple of hours and went marlinfishing at noon. It was very quiet until 3.30 when a very big fish eate the Bonze Mongrel Dog. At first she didn´t take any line but as she felt pressure she started racing off. Unfortunately she didn´t do that on the surface so it was very difficult to keep up with her. After two minutes of hard backing down over the corner we had 800 yards of line out and I was getting very worried. The angle of the line came up a bit and I had to take the chance to turn the boat. Phil Riley finally gained slowly on her. After 1 hour Colin got the leader”

Ascension – 3rd Grander of the Year

Ascension Island – Our 3rd Grander of the Year came courtesy of Capt. Olaf Grimkowski. Capt. Olaf weighed a 1,093 lbs. Blue Marlin while fishing English Bay. Fish took a Blackbart Abaco Prowler and was brought boat side after a 35-Minute fight.

Capt. Olaf tells us “The fish took a lot of line and I chased her for 3 miles on the surface until we came close and saw her and decided to take her in”.

Olaf has only been fishing for 9-Days this season and got this beauty. Hope this is a positive outlook to the rest of the season!

Brazil – 2nd Grander of the Year

Grander Blue Marlin for Capt. Tuba on the Wahoo

Canavieiras, Brazil – Royal Charlotte Bank – What a day for Captain Antonio “Tuba” Amaral on the Wahoo. Not only did he produce the 2nd Grander of 2012, he went 4 of 7 on Blue Marlin releasing a 250, 500, 700 and the 1,000+. One of the finest big fish days on Blue Marlin we have heard in a year. This is Tuba’s 2nd Grander of the Season as well.

The fish took  a Zacatak Animal in purple/pink with a single 11/0 Hays hook!

Congratulations to Capt. Antonio on a FINE season and there is more to come!

Kona – 1st Grander of the Year

Grander Blue Marlin for Kona Concept

Kona, HI – It should come as no surprise that our first Grander of the Year comes from the famed Grander grounds of Kona. Capt. Steve Tarbill on the Kona Concept put Angler Paul Morris on a 1,040 lbs. Blue Marlin.

Congratulations to Capt. Steve and to Paul Morris on a fish of a lifetime! Here is what Capt. Steve had to say.

The fish took a Joe Yee 501  running on the long corner.  We never saw the fish, just a massive explosion of white water.  The fish never jumped and the first time we saw it was when we were almost at leader.  It just ran away from the boat until we had about 200 yards left on our Penn 130.  We were backing down as fast as we could go the whole time.  We got a lot of  line back, it made another long run and then our angler just worked it back to the boat.  The fight from beginning to end was  about one hour.  We had  Amilon 130 as our line and Jinkai 600 lb. test as leader.  The short fight may have been partly due to our angler who is built like an NFL tight end and very fit.  It helped a lot when the fish was close to the boat.

Brazil – 43rd Grander of the Year

Canavieras, Brazil – The Royal Charlotte Bank has produced another Grander, this time to Capt. Antonio “Tuba” Amaral on the Wahoo. Capt. Antonio released this beautiful Blue Marlin he called over 1,000 lbs, which may very well be the last Grander of 2o11.

Fish was fought for 35 Minutes and was caught on a Black Bart Brazil Pro jet black-pink skirt with a single hays hook 11/0.

Samoa – 41st Grander of the Year

Samoa – The first one is always special and you can just tell how excited Capt. Chris Donato on Southern Destiny is for catching his first Grander Blue Marlin. Capt. Chris weighed a 1,025 lbs. Pacific Blue, that he got on the troll with a Black Bart Monster Bait. Took him two and half hours with as much as 60 lbs. of drag to get her to the boat as she was hooked deep into her bill.

Cairns, Aus – 38th Grander of the Year

Grander on the Shaka

Cairns, AustraliaCapt. Jared Weir on Shaka weighed a 1,097 lbs Black Marlin on November 25th, to follow up his released Grander (40th Grander of the Year) on November 24th. Here is what Capt. Weir had to say about the fish.

Consecutive granders for us.  The first fish was caught on the afternoon of the 24th Nov. One we estimated to be over a thousand pound which we release.  On the 25th we decided to boat the fish for our angler.   Fight time was 15 minutes and from the bite to the boat was epic for both crew and angler. It was also our last day fishing the GBR for the 2011 season.
